Companion animal【伴侶動物】
A domesticated or domestic-bred animal kept primarily for companionship, whose needs can be readily met in the human home, or in close daily relationship with humans ※2
主に伴侶として飼育されている、飼いならされた動物であり、その欲求は人間の家で、または人間との密接な日常関係で容易に満たすことができる
Community cat【地域の猫】
Community cats exist as single cats or in colonies. They are cared for within the immediate human community, with one or more humans providing for at least some of their needs. They generally live outside, but may venture into one or more houses or buildings within the community. They are generally accepting of some human contact ※2
地域の猫は、一匹の猫として、またはコロニーとして存在する。彼らは人間の身近な地域内で世話をされ、1人または複数の人間が彼らの欲求の少なくとも一部を満たしている。通常は屋外で生活するが、地域内の1つまたは複数の家や建物に入り込むこともある。一般的に、人との接触をある程度受け入れる。
（補足）Community catはその地域に根付き暮らしている野良猫全般を指します。日本における「地域猫」とは概念が異なることに注意が必要です。
Cull【駆除】
Killing of cats solely for the purpose of preventing them breeding and removing them from the environment ※2
猫の繁殖を防ぎ、環境から取り除くことのみを目的とした猫の殺処分
（補足）cullingにより「真空効果」が生じるため、駆除により野良猫の個体数を減らすことはできないとされています。

Depopulation【デポピュレーション】
to significantly reduce the number of animals in the shelter through euthanasia ※1
安楽殺によってシェルター内の動物の数を大幅に減らすこと
The rapid destruction of a population of animals in response to urgent circumstances with as much consideration given to the welfare of the animals as practicable. ※3
緊急事態に対応して、可能な限り動物の福祉に配慮した上で、動物の集団を迅速に消滅させること
（補足）depopulationは「過疎(化)」「人口減」という意味。
Disinfection【消毒】
a process that will kill most of the pathogens in a given area. In shelters a disinfectant is usually a chemical ※1
特定の場所に存在する病原体のほとんどを死滅させること。通常、シェルターでは化学薬品で行われる。
Distress【苦痛】
Very marked and/or severe short- or long-term negative stress ※2
非常に顕著かつ深刻な短期または長期の負のストレス
The effect of stimuli that initiate adaptive responses that are not beneficial to the animal—thus, the animal’s response to stimuli interferes with its welfare and comfort. ※3
動物にとって有益ではない適応反応を引き起こす刺激の影響－つまり、刺激に対する動物の反応が動物の福祉や快適さを妨げること
