手術候補の猫の体重測定には、2つの意味があります。

体重測定の必要性について、「マニュアル」にはこう記載されています。
Once it is determined that a community cat is a candidate for surgery, it is important to accurately weigh each patient to calculate the appropriate doses of anesthetics and analgesics. Patient weight should be determined prior to the administration of any pre-medication or anesthetic agent.
community catが手術候補であると判断されたら、麻酔薬や鎮痛薬の適切な投与量を計算するために、各患者の体重を正確に測定することが重要です。患者の体重は、前投薬や麻酔薬を投与する前に決定する必要があります。
手術可能な体重であることの確認
体重測定は、その猫が手術に耐えうる大きさかどうかを判断するためにも必要です。「マニュアル」にはこう記載されています。
Each clinic or surgeon should determine minimum weight and age at which patients will be accepted for surgery. A typical guideline is that healthy kittens in good body condition must be at least two months of age and weigh at least two pounds in order to be candidates for surgery.
各クリニックや外科医は、患者を手術に受け入れる最低体重と年齢を決定する必要があります。典型的なガイドラインは、体調の良い健康な子猫が手術の候補となるためには、生後2ヶ月以上で、体重が2ポンド以上でなければならないというものです。
手術を行う最低体重や最低年齢は、各クリニックの獣医師によって判断されます。一般的なSpay-Neuter Programでは、「8週齢以降、体重2ポンド（900g）以上」というのが標準です（例えば、Alley Cat Allies）。Holck(2018)は「6週齢以降、体重1.5ポンド（675g）以上」※2を提唱しています。
体重の測定
人慣れしていない猫の体重を量るのに、猫をケージから出して体重計に乗せることは困難です。もっとも、人慣れしている猫であっても素直に体重計には乗ってくれないのですが。「マニュアル」にはこう記載されています。
Patient weight can be determined by weighing the trap or transfer cage alone prior to the trapping of the cat and writing the weight on the trap or cage. …The weight of the patient is the difference between the weight of the trap and the weight of the trap with the patient inside.
患者の体重は、猫を捕獲する前に捕獲器または移送用ケージの重量を単独で測定し、その重量をトラップまたはケージに記入することで決定できます。（中略）患者の体重は、捕獲器の重さと患者を入れた捕獲器の重さの差です。
