休日譲渡への誤解① 休日譲渡は返還率が高い？
休日の譲渡、特に譲渡会においては、来場者は気分が高揚した状態で衝動的に動物を譲り受け、後日シェルターに動物を返すといわれてきました。しかし現代においては、休日の譲渡会は当たり前の光景となっています。
Shelter adoption lore once held that pets acquired around holidays were more likely to be returned after the glow of the holidays passed. This myth has been solidly debunked, and now holiday adoption promotions have become an annual event for thousands of shelters in which more than a million pets are adopted each year. Some shelters even deliver pets on Christmas or to birthday parties.
かつてシェルターの譲渡では、ホリデーシーズンに引き取られたペットは、ホリデーシーズンの華やかさが過ぎ去った後、返還される可能性が高いという言い伝えがありました。この神話は確実に否定されており、今ではホリデーシーズンの譲渡は何千ものシェルターの恒例行事となっており、毎年100万匹以上のペットが譲渡されています。シェルターの中には、クリスマスや誕生日パーティーにペットを届けるところもあります。
休日譲渡への誤解② ハロウィーンには虐待目的で猫を譲り受ける者が多い
西洋において黒猫は魔女のパートナーとされ、過去においては生贄や処刑の対象とされていました。特にハロウィーンには死者の霊とともに魔女がやってくるとされるため、黒猫はハロウィーンの象徴となっています。それを逆手に取り、米国の一部のシェルターではハロウィーンに「黒猫祭り」と称した譲渡会が開催されています。
Another myth that has been more difficult to dislodge is that certain colored cats are at risk for abuse around Halloween. The thinking goes that followers of the occult and pranksters will adopt cats, usually black, tortoiseshell, or other colors, for the purpose of cruel rituals.
もうひとつの神話は、ハロウィーンの時期に特定の色の猫が虐待される危険性があるというもので、これはなかなか払拭できません。これは、オカルトの信奉者やイタズラ好きな人たちが、残酷な儀式のために黒や三毛などの色の猫を入手するというものです。
Although cruelty occurs year-round, there is no evidence that it increases at Halloween. Even if it were true, it is unlikely those intent on breaking the law would acquire a cat from a shelter, where their identification and address would be recorded and the transfer documented with an adoption contract, when it is a simple and discreet task to acquire a cat anonymously via Craigslist or other methods.
虐待は年間を通して行われていますが、ハロウィーンに増えるという証拠はありません。仮にそれが事実だとしても、Craigslistやその他の方法で匿名で猫を入手することが簡単で目立たない作業であるにもかかわらず、法を犯そうとする者が、身分証明書や住所が記録され、譲渡の契約書が交わされるシェルターから猫を入手するとは考えられません。
Blocking the adoption of black cats, which are already handicapped by long stays in the shelter, is especially counterproductive. Some shelters instead even find ways to promote adoption of Halloween’s iconic black cats.
特に、シェルターに長くいることでハンディキャップを負っている黒猫の譲渡を阻止するのは逆効果です。代わりに、ハロウィーンの象徴である黒猫の譲渡を促進する方法を見つけるシェルターもあります。
