5. Do you return cats with stomatitis to a colony?

Stomatitis is a relatively uncommon condition to see in cats, but can be more prevalent in FeLV or FIV positive cats. A complete discussion of how to address these cases can be found at this link. These cases should be discussed with your veterinarian, as not all cases of oral inflammation are stomatitis and might not require immediate intervention. Severe cases, on the other hand, may not resolve without extensive treatment which would be difficult or prohibitive to provide to a feral cat. In that case, a careful evaluation should be made to determine whether the level of suffering warrants euthanasia. Factors to consider include the body condition and general demeanor of the cat.

【のらぬこの解説】そもそも、体調不良の猫をリターンするべきではありません。口内炎により摂食不能の猫は即保護すべきです。口内炎はFIV（猫免疫不全ウイルス）やFeLV（猫白血病ウイルス）の感染を疑う症状の一つですので、FIVやFeLVの検査を実施することになりますが、もし陰性であったとしても、慢性の口内炎は「難治性口内炎」とも呼ばれ、化学療法や抜歯など大掛かりな治療が必要になる可能性があります。その場合費用と時間をかけて治療したとしても完治は難しいですので、治療によりいたずらに苦痛を長引かせるよりも、安楽殺を選択することもあり得ます。
