さらに、何万人もの猫の飼い主がすでに裏庭で「サンクチュアリ」、より一般的には「キャティオ」と呼ばれる、個々の所有者が屋外の囲いの中で猫の安全を確保するために必要な簡単な手順を実行しています。Googleで検索すると、責任あるペット飼育の原則を放棄することなく、猫が安全に楽しめる屋外スペースを作るための無数の選択肢があることがわかります。

「キャティオ」は日本ではあまりなじみがありませんが、米国では屋外で猫を安全に遊ばせるための「囲い」が広く普及しています。“catio”とは“cat”と“patio”を組み合わせた造語です。「パティオ」とは「スペインやラテンアメリカの邸宅で、塀で囲まれた中庭。」（精選版 日本国語大辞典）のことで、「キャティオ」とは、住居に併設された、屋外の飼い猫用の囲いのことをいいます。窓の外に囲いを取り付けて少しの間猫を遊ばせる程度の規模のものもありますし、ベランダやバルコニーを囲ってそこで猫を遊ばせるようなものもあります。またそこで生活のすべてが完結するような、小学校の校庭の鳥小屋レベルの規模のものもあります。HAHFが提唱する猫の「サンクチュアリ」とは、比較的大規模の「キャティオ」で野良猫を終生飼養しようとするものです。
