A veterinarian should be present and available to triage and address complications that might occur during anesthesia, surgery, or the immediate postoperative period and should remain on the clinic premises until all patients are extubated, sternal, and responsive.

Clinic staffing should be appropriate and commensurate with the volume of patients as necessary to provide high-quality veterinary medical care in accordance with these guidelines.
