Care should be taken to position the patient in a manner that avoids compression of the thorax or compromise of the diaphragm and that optimizes airway patency.
患者の体位は、胸郭の圧迫や横隔膜の損傷を避け、気道を確保するよう注意すべきである。(p175L)
Hyperextension of the limbs should be avoided, because it could limit excursion of the chest, compromising respiration, or result in increased tension on the suspensory ligaments, potentially complicating exposure of the ovaries and increasing postoperative discomfort.
手足の過伸展は避けるべきである。なぜなら、胸部の伸展が制限されて呼吸が損なわれたり、懸垂靭帯の張力が増して卵巣の露出が複雑になり、術後の不快感が増す可能性があるからである。(p175L)
If ties are used to secure the limbs, care must be taken to avoid any constriction of the extremities.

【のらぬこの解説】
動物を手術台に載せる際には、手術のしやすさも重要ですが、気道の確保も重要です。そのため、頭や首をまっすぐにして保定します。腹部手術の場合、動物を仰向けに置き手足を伸ばして紐で手術台に固定します。しかし無理やり伸ばしてはなりません。去勢手術の場合は陰嚢を露出させるように、後肢を頭側に伸ばして固定します。
避妊去勢手術に特化したいわゆるスペイクリニックにおいては、例えば動物の保定が容易なV字型の手術台や、手製の保定具などを用いることもあります。例えばASPCA（米国動物虐待防止協会）のスペイクリニックでは“Gear Tie”や“Sam Splint”と呼ばれるオリジナルの保定具が用いられています。その際に動物が動くおそれがなければ、紐で固定するかどうかは執刀医の好みによります。
