“The Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ 2016 Veterinary Medical Care Guidelines for Spay-Neuter Programs”※（ASVによる避妊去勢プログラムにおける獣医療ガイドライン2016；以下「S/Nガイドライン」）から、避妊去勢手術における術者の準備について見ていきましょう。
Surgeon preparation 術者の準備
The following issues should be considered with regard to surgeon preparation.
術者の準備については、以下の点を考慮すべきである。(p175L)
Surgical attire 手術着
The surgeon should wear appropriate surgical attire intended for use within the operating area.
術者は、手術場での使用に適した手術着を着用すべきである。(p175L)
Surgical caps and masks 手術帽とマスク
Surgical caps and masks are required, except during routine castration of cats and puppies.
猫や子犬の定例的な去勢手術を除き、手術帽とマスクが必要である。(p175L)
Surgical hand and arm scrub 手と腕の手術用洗浄
Surgeons should perform appropriate hand and arm antisepsis prior to gloving for all abdominal surgeries and for castration of adult dogs.
執刀医は、すべての腹部手術と成犬の去勢手術において、手袋を装着する前に適切な手と腕の消毒を行うべきである。(p175L)
For routine castration of cats and puppies, surgeons should wash their hands or perform hand antisepsis prior to gloving.
猫や子犬の定例的な去勢手術では、術者は手袋を装着する前に手を洗うか、手の消毒を行うべきである。(p175R)
【のらぬこの解説】
避妊去勢手術は外科手術ですから、術者もそれなりの準備が必要です。つまり手術着や手術帽、マスクを着用し、手の洗浄と消毒ののちに手術用手袋や手術用ガウンを着用します。しかし一般の外科手術と異なり、切開部位の無菌状態を保つことができるのであれば、手術用滅菌ガウンの着用は必須ではありません。しかし手術着の着用は必須です。
なお「犬や猫の避妊手術および成犬の去勢手術」と「猫や子犬の去勢手術」では求められる衛生レベルが若干異なります。後者においては手術帽やマスク、手術用手袋の着用は必須ではありません。手術用ではない一般診療用の手袋の着用も認められます。後者においては手術用ドレープも省略できます。
