“The Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ 2016 Veterinary Medical Care Guidelines for Spay-Neuter Programs”※（ASVによる避妊去勢プログラムにおける獣医療ガイドライン2016；以下「S/Nガイドライン」）から、退院後の動物へのケア指示について見ていきましょう。
Postoperative care instructions 術後のケア
Clients should be provided with clear instructions for postoperative care.
クライアントには術後のケアについて明確に指示すべきである。(p179R)
Both written and verbal instructions should be provided when possible.
可能であれば、書面と口頭の両方で指示するべきである。(p179R)
【のらぬこの解説】
避妊去勢手術は外科手術ですから、退院後のケアについてクライアントに指示する必要があります。指示内容はペットか野良猫かによっても異なりますし、特別な処置を実施した場合にはその旨の説明や指示も必要です。なお「クライアント」（依頼人）にはペットの飼い主はもちろんですが、野良猫の世話人など、文字通り避妊去勢手術を依頼した人が含まれます。
指示内容について、「S/Nガイドライン」で例示されているのは以下の事項です。
• 実施した処置の概要について（Summary of procedures performed）
• 正常な回復行動および異常な回復行動について（Normal and abnormal recovery behavior）
• 不快感や痛みのサインについて（Signs of discomfort or pain）
• 切開創のケアと観察について（Care and monitoring of the surgical incision）
• 食事や水を与えるタイミングについて（When to offer food and water）
• （もしあれば）運動の制限について（Exercise restrictions, if any）
• （もしあれば）投薬の指示（Medication instructions, if any）
• 個々の患者のニーズに基づいて指示されるその他の特別な指示（Other special instructions as indicated based on the needs of the individual patient）
• 質問や懸念のための連絡先を含む、術後の合併症の通報に関する指示（Instructions for notification of postoperative complications including contact information for questions or concerns）
• 緊急に獣医師の再診察が必要となる状態の変化について（Changes in status requiring urgent veterinary reevaluation）
• 緊急時のケアに関する指示（Instructions for emergency care）
• 継続的な獣医療ケアに関する推奨事項（Recommendations for ongoing veterinary care）
